This Gab Social media platform is now riding on The Mastodon distributed network as a custom node. How and why Gab chose the network is a stroke of genius at most, and luck at worst.
An early victim of the radical left’s cancel culture, they refused to give up! And now they lead the way self-hosting on a distributed network!
No doubt the best conservative social media platforms will self-host on a microblogging network. Looking further out, there are even more secure, ground breaking network solutions whose time is coming.
If one reads even the “prestigious” Wikipedia, you’d think Gab.com is a “goose-stepping” Nazi organization. What goes on there with a handful of angry Americans is no less prone to violence or counter-culture than Twitter’s lineup of radical leftists.
FAQs and Definitions:
I realize the concept of distributed networking is new to most readers, so let’s start out defining terms.
Is a distributed social media network built on Linux operating system and licensed as “open source.” It is known for offering a free speech space on any topic legal to our US Constitution.
Free “Open Source” Software (FOSS) downloadable software where programmers can join in the development and use free.
The Mastodon is an “open source” public distributed network.
An “instance” in information technology is similar to a window in a browser but can run programs, rather than just displaying. They’re often also referred to as Virtual Machines (VM). Amazingly, entire networks can run as a single “instance.”
When “open source” software is customized, it’s called a “Forked” copy or “instance. And, upon an even higher level of customization, the user can do a “Hard Fork” and apply to the government for their own separate license. Gab.com “Forked” copy qualified for its own separate license.
Dozens of other public social media distribution networks have come and gone. Needing funding and a critical mass of users, up to now, none have succeeded on a large scale. The size of Gab Social’s user base changes the paradigm.
Definition of The Mastodon
Mastodon is free and open-source software for running self-hosted social networking services. It has microblogging features similar to the Twitter service, which are offered by a large number of independently run Mastodon nodes (known as “instances”), each with its own code of conduct, terms of service, privacy options, and moderation policies.Wikipedia, Mastodon Software.
The Beginning Model for an Online Conservative Comeback.
Conservatives have only begun to peacefully fight back, and the Gab Social model of using distributed network is the beginning. Later, I’ll tell you about the brilliant end game.
The unholy union of Gab Social on The Mastodon is celebrated as the only strategic move that rattles the radical liberals.
- It puts de-platforming conservatives out of their reach.
- It opens up secure private subnetworks of conservative businesses and groups.
- Positions conservatives for the coming age of blockchain social media and cyber token and currency platforms.
In spite of the giant lead in technology by Big Tech, we have a chance of winning with superior technology!
Imagine a Mastodon-like Fediverse as a Collection Conservative Businesses and Organizations!
The Fediverse (a portmanteau of “federation” and “universe”) is an ensemble of federated (i.e. interconnected) servers used for web publishing (i.e. social networking, microblogging, blogging, or websites) and file hosting.Wikipedia, Definition of Fediverse
In each instance, managers make their own “Community Rules.” They extend those of Mastodon’s main rules.
For now, at least, banning is from a particular instance or user! Their status remains active otherwise, and their followers remain attached to their username if they join another instance.
On Mastodon, you move to another instance, and all your friends follow you! They don’t even know you’ve moved to another instance! How cools is that?
How Gab Social pays the price for being first.
This move to The Mastodon was not necessarily their choice. If they’d researched more and weren’t under such a panic, they would have known the “creator” of the Mastodon is a liberal socialist Democrat. They might have even created there own private distributed network.
But, considering the pressure they were under to find a new home for Gab Social, their decision to ride The Mastodon is understandable.
By pay walling basic features that are freely available on Mastodon, Gab puts itself at a disadvantage compared to any Mastodon instance. Mastodon remains non commercially structured, and all features are available to users free from the start.Mastodon Statement on Gab.com — Eleanor , Jul 4, 2019
